Name(s): Chia Xin Yun Class: Sec 3 GAP Choose Materials Used: Poster paint and mixed media This piece of work titled “Choose” depicts two framed pictures. These pictures are the reflection of each other. One shows the beautiful nature, while other shows the destruction of the environment. By standing directly in front of the middle of the painting, an illusion is created and one can choose to see either pictures. Either choice will lead to the other being destroyed, while the chosen scene will become reality. How did you come up with the idea for this artwork? How much help did the teacher give? I came up with the idea when flipping through an art book about Nature. My teacher, Mrs. Teo, lent me several art books to look through, amongst which is a book which I got my inspiration. She helped me by looking through my sketches and pointing out areas for improvement. What are some of the difficulties faced when making the work? Firstly, it was difficult to create a painting that can effectively convey the message of protecting the environment. Secondly, the painting was quite small and there were several details and this proved to be a challenge when painting acrylic. What have you learnt from this extended art project? (technical or about the environment) I have learnt more about perspectives and the use of colours and definitely improved in painting with acrylic. Through my research, I have obtained a deeper insight into the environment and destructions caused to nature. It has changed my view of nature, which I have now learnt to better appreciate. Did you make any sketches, preparatory studies before commencing on this? Yes. If you had more resources, what will you improve for the art work? Or not at all?
