Extreme Earth

Materials Used: Poster paint, magazines

The earth in the middle is painted black and grey to represent the dying state our earth is in now – polluted. The background depicts four different kinds of weather – stormy, snowy, sunny and windy. While one part of the world is experiencing floods, another is experiencing droughts.  This shows how extreme our climate have become due to our thoughtless activities.

How did you come up with the idea for this artwork? How much help did the teacher give?

The teacher explained the theme and also showed us some examples. As we brainstormed, we were reminded of the recent floods and droughts across the world. Therefore, we came up with this idea. Our teacher helped us to organize the collage to make it simple and yet attractive.

What are some of the difficulties faced when making the work?

Some of the painters’ styles were hard to grasp, therefore copying their style to the best requires a lot of time and effort. Small details also require considerable attention as they can affect the whole art piece.

(For groups) How did you come to a consensus on any decisions?

We discussed and expressed our opinions and if there were differences in opinions, we will find the best solution to the problem.

What have you learnt from this extended art project? (technical or about the environment)

We learnt how to observe other painters’ styles and incorporate them together to produce a beautiful art piece. We have also learnt how the weather has been affected by our human activities.

Did you make any sketches, preparatory studies before commencing on this?

We brainstormed on the idea, gather pictures and arranged them together for the first draft. Then we sought the teacher’s help to improve our composition.

If you had more resources, what will you improve for the art work? Or not at all?

We would use more variety of art resources to make the art piece more interesting.
