Name: Fransisca Santosa Class:Sec 4 GAP The Mangrove Fairy (illustration plates) Materials.software Used: Acrylics and Water Colour, edited in Photoshop CS My work is based on the poem written by Vivienne Ledlie with the same name. It is about a fairy who lives in the mangrove and her life together with her playmates. I used acrylic paint for the main subject and water colour for the background. This is because water colours are usually lighter than acrylics and can give a more ‘faded’ effect. How did you come up with the idea for this artwork? How much help did the teacher give? I came up with this idea from my coursework theme “Fairy tales”. Then I found Vivienne Ledlie’s “The Mangrove Fairy” and decided to illustrate it. My teacher gave some guidance on the colours, concept and composition of the artwork. What are some of the difficulties faced when making the work? I have never really used acrylics and water colour before so I did this srtwork with 2 unfamiliar media. Thus I had to adjust to the different materials within a short time. Also, I have never used InDesign before. It’s operation is slightly different from Photoshop, which I am more familiar with. So I had some difficulty adjusting to it. What have you learnt from this extended art project? (technical or about the environment) I have learnt a lot about InDesign. I have also learnt that there are actually flowers in the mangrove swamps. I use to think mangroves are dull and gloomy places. However, now I appreciate that there are many other interesting things in mangroves and it can actually be quite colourful. Thus, I made the mangrove environment in my artwork a more vibrant and colourful one. Did you make any sketches, preparatory studies before commencing on this? Yes. I made the sketches using pencils, soft pastels, poster colours etc. These sketches include the different organisms of the mangroves. I did a mind map and researched from the internet about mangroves, it’s occupants characteristics and surroundings as well. If you had more resources, what will you improve for the art work? Or not at all?
