Out of Recycling Comes Beauty

Materials Used: Newspaper, Plastic Bottles, Straws, Galvanised Wire

A lantern in the image of a flower in a patch of grass, this sculpture is made mostly out of recycled materials. This sculpture was made with the intention of ‘bringing light to recycling’, represented by the lantern (with a light bulb inside). It is set in a ‘grass’ patch made of frayed straws and glitter.

How did you come up with the idea for this artwork? How much help did the teacher give?

Each of us drew a design and then we voted on the best, which is our current design. The teacher was very helpful, giving us ideas to beautify our project and helping us find materials.

What are some of the difficulties faced when making the work?

When we tried using brushes to paint the plastic at first, we wasted a lot of paint as the paint did not stick. Also when we made the recycled paper, it tore easily and required skill to handle.

(For groups) How did you come to a consensus on any decisions?

We either voted or drew lots, but most of the time we agreed unanimously.

What have you learnt from this extended art project? (technical or about the environment)

There are many things around us that can be recycled to create wonderful pieces of art.

Did you make any sketches, preparatory studies before commencing on this?

Yes.

If you had more resources, what will you improve for the art work? Or not at all?

We would like to improve on the stability of the structure.
