The Life of Singapore

Materials Used: Acrylic, Canvas Shoes

Plants are part of our nature. Nature gives us life. Without plants, we will die. This design is inspired by 3 different plants, namely, the ixora, frangipani and mimosa, which are commonly found in Singapore.

How did you come up with the idea for this artwork? How much help did the teacher give?

I came up with the design when I was walking home. I saw mimosa plant amongst the grass and a whole row of ixora plant. So, I decided to draw them. I added the frangipani because its shape is simple and yet adds colour to the design. My teacher guided me along the way, teaching me techniques to use. They helped me a lot.

What are some of the difficulties faced when making the work?

Firstly, my work has many small details and different colours. I had to be very careful and this made my progress very slow as I had to do bit by bit. It was also very hard to paint on the canvas shoes due to the texture. Furthermore, we only had one go, if something is painted wrongly, it is very hard to cover up and paint over again.

(For groups) How did you come to a consensus on any decisions?

nil

What have you learnt from this extended art project? (technical or about the environment)

-       Whenever we do any assignment or work, we have to put our heart into it and get it done properly.

-       Nature is our life.

Did you make any sketches, preparatory studies before commencing on this?

Yes, I had to search for pictures, try sketching it on paper first, try the colours and then start painting on the shoes.

If you had more resources, what will you improve for the art work? Or not at all?

Efficiency and design wise. Maybe I could do things more efficiently and faster. I would also definitely improve on my design to make it better.
